ABOUT THE VRC SUMMER LEADERSHIP CAMP

The VRC Summer Leadership Camp is a unique, inclusive, four-day experience designed for children who are blind or visually impaired, but where everyone is welcome.

The mission of this camp is to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where children who are blind, visually impaired, and sighted can connect, learn from one another, build confidence, and develop leadership skills through shared experiences.

As the only camp of its kind in our community, we provide opportunities for meaningful social interaction, creativity, movement, and discovery that foster understanding, inclusion, and friendship among children of all abilities.

Through accessible activities such as art, storytelling, puzzles, movement, and team-building experiences, our camp encourages independence, self-esteem, empathy, and collaboration. By bringing together children with diverse perspectives and abilities, we help every camper recognize their unique strengths, value their voice, and discover their potential to lead, contribute, and thrive in an inclusive community.

Open to children and teens ages 6 - 19, the VRC Summer Leadership Camp is $20 to attend. The VRC ensures a supportive, personalized, and accessible experience for every camper. The camp welcomes youth of all vision levels, backgrounds, and abilities, with programming thoughtfully designed to be inclusive, accessible, and age-appropriate for every participant.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER

Trained mentors and volunteers participate alongside campers during selected activities, including hands-on experiences that simulate non-visual learning and navigation through the use of blindfolds and adaptive techniques. These activities are designed to foster empathy, awareness, and a deeper understanding of the experiences of individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Throughout the week, mentors will document their observations and reflections in journals, encouraging thoughtful engagement, personal growth, and meaningful connections with campers.

To ensure a safe, supportive, and accessible environment, the camp maintains a low camper-to-adult ratio. Children who are visually impaired will generally be supported at a ratio of one adult for every two campers, while campers who are completely blind may receive one-on-one support when needed. This approach allows for appropriate supervision, individualized encouragement, and assistance while still promoting independence, confidence, and self-advocacy. Our goal is to provide every child with the support they need to participate fully, explore new experiences, and develop leadership skills in a safe and empowering setting.

We invite compassionate, enthusiastic individuals to join our volunteer team.
