BLINDNESS AWARENESS MONTH EVENTS ACROSS CUMBERLAND COUNTY

The Vision Resource Center of Cumberland County (VRC) will recognize Blindness Awareness Month throughout October with a series of community events designed to amplify the voices of people who are blind or visually impaired, increase awareness, encourage inclusion, and bring the greater Cumberland County community together.

This October, the Vision Resource Center of Cumberland County invites our members, families, volunteers, community partners, and neighbors across Cumberland County to join us in recognizing Blindness Awareness Month. Throughout the month, VRC will create opportunities to advocate, learn, connect, celebrate, and increase visibility for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Our 2026 Blindness Awareness Month activities include a Community Town Hall, a World Sight Day Walk through Downtown Fayetteville, and our main community celebration recognizing Blind Americans Equality Day & White Cane Day.

We’re kicking off Blindness Awareness Month by making space for the voices of our community.

Individuals who are blind, visually impaired, or living with disabilities are invited to share their experiences, needs, concerns, and requests related to accessibility, transportation, independence, inclusion, community participation, and other issues affecting everyday life.

Current candidates and public officials have been invited to attend and listen directly to community members.

Free and open to everyone.
The Jive Turkey Leg food truck will be on-site with food available for purchase.

World Sight Day Downtown Fayetteville Walk | October 8

Thursday, October 8 | 3–5 PM

Start & End: Fayetteville City Hall, 433 Hay Street
Turnaround: Franklin Commons, 111 Person Street

Bring a sign, invite your friends and family, and walk alongside members of the blind and visually impaired community. Along the route, we’ll share fun facts, questions, and interactive activities to encourage conversation and learning about blindness, visual impairment, and accessibility.

After the walk, we encourage everyone to stay Downtown, and enjoy dinner at a downtown restaurant of your choice.

Blind Americans Equality Day & White Cane Day | October 15

Thursday, October 15 | 11 AM–2 PM
Taste of West Africa
116 Person St., Fayetteville, NC 28301

We’re bringing people with and without disabilities together for an afternoon of movement, music, resources, food, education, and entertainment. Enjoy yoga, Chair Zumba, a live performance, a guest speaker and UPLIFT moment, live music by Michael Macias & Sha’Zion Newkirk, Open Mic, and music from DJ Quince Lanford.

Community organizations will also be on-site sharing information and resources available to individuals who are blind, visually impaired, or living with disabilities.

We’ll close out Blindness Awareness Month by taking the conversation to the airwaves with a special edition of the VRC 'Turns the Lights On' Podcast.
