A Note From Our Executive Director

Happy Summer!!! The VRC thanks Allison Blough for her blogging services for us monthly.  She has started a new business, Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique in Southern Pines so this is our first blog without her,  the VRC will miss her, but we wish her the best.

We kicked off the summer right with Bowling with our youth and Kure Beach with our adults.  Everyone had a great time. Thanks again to United Way and Cumberland Community Foundation's Elizabeth Hudspeth Grant and so many of our funders.  We could not do this without you. We are getting geared up for our 3rd Annual "Out of Sight" Chicken Wing Fling, and we have some excited competitors and awesome sponsors.  What makes this year, so special this is our 80th year in business!! Yes, 80 years helping the blind and visually impaired in our community.  In the eight years, I have been Director I have wanted to provide more of what my participants want. What may you ask skills!!! Skills to go about daily life as independent as possible, I have only scratched the surface. I know we make it look easy, but blindness is an expensive disability.  iPhones are the easiest phone for the blind and visually impaired to use, however, the least expensive is $349.00.  iPhone provides voiceover,  zoom magnification, money readers and color identifiers.  Other equipment,  such as CCTV (electronic magnification system)($2000); Handheld Magnifiers ($400); Canes ($40); Talking Phones ($150) Talking Watches ($40 and up) and PenFriend (Voice Labeling System $150), etc. It disheartens me to start to give a demonstration of equipment and before I start here comes the question "How much does it cost," the room becomes quiet, and I notice the signs, then the lack of attention because they will not be able to afford it.

The VRC wants to make a difference, and we want the entire community to come out and support the Wing Fling by attending, purchasing a ticket or becoming a sponsor. Check out our website www.wingflingfay.com.  Sponsorships start as low as $100.00 tickets range from $5-$10.00 and VIP is only $40.00.  Help us blow our 80th out of the water with bringing the 676 blind and visually impaired in Cumberland new hope!! Make a difference!
